Aleut proudly honors Karen Ravenscroft as our Student of the Year—Karen is helping shape the future of her home community of Akutan through
education, creativity, and a deep commitment to student success. Since earning her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in 2022, she has dedicated herself to creating meaningful learning opportunities that connect students to their culture, community, and the world around them.
As one of two teachers at Akutan School, Karen takes on many roles in support of her students. Her passion for teaching goes beyond the classroom, creating experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity, and cultural understanding.
One of Karen’s most memorable projects was organizing a Cultural Exchange Week between Akutan students and a group from Hawaiʻi. Students shared traditional foods, dances, clothing, and cultural practices while learning from one another and celebrating the unique strengths of their communities. The experience fostered pride, connection, and a greater understanding of Indigenous cultures.
Karen has also worked to expand access to arts education for her students. She partnered with Seward artist Justine Pechuzal to create a mural that now hangs in the school gym and coordinated virtual piano lessons with music educator Lynda Lybeck Robinson. What began as online lessons eventually led to an in-person visit to Akutan, where students explored music together and even helped create a song for their school.
Committed to lifelong learning, Karen is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Her graduate work focuses on developing frameworks that help rural Alaska educators teach multigrade classrooms through project-based and place-based learning. Her goal is to create practical approaches that reflect the realities, strengths, and cultures of rural communities.
Karen credits scholarships, mentors, colleagues, students, families, and community members for supporting her educational journey. In turn, she is committed to paying that support forward by helping young people discover their potential and develop a lifelong love of learning.
Through her dedication to education, her creativity, and her commitment to serving Akutan, Karen is creating opportunities that will benefit students and communities for years to come.
