Enrollment reached 2,600of which 1,900 were found eligible. Deadline for all applications to be filed by March 30, 1973. The Pacific Northwest Council of the Aleut League is active in getting more Aleuts enrolled who live in the “lower 48.” A contest for the best name for the newsletter. TAC is involved in litigation against the State to stop the sale of land in the Aleutians.

The first Annual meeting of Shareholders was held. Permanent Board of Directors meets for the first time. Roll of stockholders was certified by the Secretary of the Interior December 1793. First distribution of dividends. TAC’s first investment is in the fishing industry. Two 120’ crabber/dragger fishing vessels have been purchased by TAC. Agreement signed with Quintana Minerals Corporation and Duvall Corporation for a four year mining exploration program. Two- story office building was purchased. Mrs. Kathryn W Smith wins the contest for the best name for the newsletter, “The Aleutian Current.”

Subsidiary corporations were formed. Fox Islands Corporation, owner and operator of the fishing vessel “Aleut Princess”. Andrean of Islands Corporation, owner and operator of the fishing vessel “Aleut Pride”. Aleutian Transportation Company, owner and operator of the motor vessel “Pribilof” operated under a bareboat charter to haul general cargo. Matanuska Sand & Gravel Inc., owner of a gravel removal permit which The Aleut Corporation holds 2/3 interest in. Aleutian Properties Inc., engaged in the development of large real estate projects which The Aleut Corporation holds 50% interest in. The Aleut Corporation purchased properties in the Fairbanks, Anchorage and Kenai areas.

Aleutian/Pribilof Islands Association was chartered as a nonprofit corporation. Under the ANCSA, revenues from resources sharing was established and TAC received its first distribution. TAC filed applications with the BLM for patent to 411 cemetery and historical sites located throughout the Aleut region.

New subsidiary Cape Sarichef, Inc. owner and operator of M/V Aleut Packer. Offices and warehouse opened in Seattle for new subsidiary Alaska Shipping Company. Property purchases were made in the Matanuska Valley for Sherwood and Aleutian Estates. A law- suit was brought against The Aleut Corporation by dissident shareholders seeking to overturn the board election.

The law suit was settledin favor of the shareholders, nullifying theboard election, the president resigned and for five months the Corporation was under supervision of a court-appointed “caretaker’. The newly elected Board of directors decided to discard unrealistic expectations and take a hard look at our Corporation.

The Corporation underwent restructure and reorganization.The M/V Aleut Princess was lost to the sea duringthe 1980 tanner crab season. TAC acquired 50% of the Alaska Marine Shipping joint venture resulting in the subsidiary Alaska Shipping Company name change to Aleut-Alaska Shipping Company and an 87% revenue increase compared to the previous year.TAC board declared a dividend for the first time since incorporation.

On August 10, 1988, President Reagan signed the World War II Reparations Bill (H.R.422) into law,amendments to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. TAC joined an agreement to participate withthe Native Lands Group in an exchange of Native lands for subsurface lands in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve.
