Chairs Report
September 2007
Dear Shareholders
It is hard to believe that
a year has gone by since our last Annual Meeting. This
is always a wonderful time of year for The Aleut Corporation
as we welcome shareholders to Anchorage for our 35th
Annual Meeting.
Yes, Aleut Corporation has now been
in existence for 35 years. It was December 1971 when
the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act formed the 12
Alaska Native Regional Corporations in the state of
Alaska, a legacy to be proud of for our future generations.
Our founding fathers hoped to improve Alaska Natives
economic and social quality of life. Rural development,
jobs for our people, self determination, preservation
of our lands and traditions and protection of our subsistence
rights were the expectations of ANCSA.
Who knew 35 years ago that we would
be where we are at today. This year’s annual report
will highlight some of the early leaders in the corporation
and I would like to take a moment to thank all who have
participated in the formation of our corporation either
by sitting on the board, working in our office or engaging
shareholders through voicing ideas, concerns and electing
the board.
The Aleut Corporation was incorporated
in 1972 under ANCSA. At that time, 3,249 shareholders
were enrolled, each given 100 shares. The Corporation
received $19.5 million dollars and was entitled to 66,000
acres of surface lands and 1.5 million acres of subsurface
estate.
It is important to know the history
of our corporation and thank those who have actively
participated in our formative years. I hope you all
will enjoy this year’s annual report and theme
as we travel through our creation and recognize those
who helped make us what we are today.
I encourage everyone to participate
by voting in this year’s election and remember
you can vote online as well as by proxy. You recently
received a letter from us explaining the lateness of
this year’s annual report printing. Please be
sure to vote your ballot as soon as possible so that
we can achieve a quorum. To encourage your timely vote,
the board has, one more time this year, implemented
a $10,000 proxy prize.
I look forward to seeing many of you
in October.
Sharon Guenther Lind
Chairman of the Board
